Job Description
Summary
The IDEA Intern will support research efforts focused on congenital heart defects through the analysis and processing of medical imaging data. Working under the mentorship of experienced faculty, the intern will participate in the full data lifecycle—including data gathering, cleaning, visualization, image processing, and computational modeling. This internship provides hands‑on experience in cardiology-related research, exposure to advanced imaging technologies, and opportunities to develop technical skills in coding, simulation tools, and data analysis.
This summer internship is designed for a current Ph.D. student seeking advanced research experience in imaging data analysis and computational cardiovascular modeling.
Job Purpose
Provides temporary administrative or laboratory support to a department while gaining practical work experience.
Job Duties
- Assist in gathering, cleaning, and organizing imaging data related to congenital heart defects.
- Process medical images, including segmentation and reconstruction of patient‑specific anatomical geometries.
- Analyze imaging and hemodynamic data using computational tools such as SIMULINK.
- Support modeling of Fontan Assist Device (FAD) interactions with cardiovascular systems under a variety of flow and pressure conditions.
- Create data visualizations and contribute to computer modeling workflows in cardiology-focused research projects.
- Collaborate with faculty mentors and research team members to meet project milestones and internship learning objectives.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in high school, trade/vocational school or higher education institution.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related STEM discipline.
- Proficiency in mathematics and/or computer programming.
- Interest or coursework in biomedical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or related STEM field.
- Experience with data analysis tools or programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python).
- Familiarity with medical imaging concepts or previous exposure to image processing.
- Interest in cardiology, congenital heart defects, or computational modeling.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Willingness to learn and work collaboratively in a research environment.
