What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a motivated R&D Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Identify near- and long-term technical challenges and encourage the innovation necessary to achieve results which have significant impact on national security.
  • Build multidisciplinary technical teams to solve current and emerging problems as defined by customer requirements.
  • Directs systematic study toward a fuller knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts and discovers or synthesizes new approaches to achieve goals.
  • Collaborate with programmatic interfaces/expertise across 5900, engineering teams across Sandia, and with trusted partners at other government agencies to achieve mission results.
  • Use systems engineering principles to implement a multidisciplinary engineering approach to research, design, or develop structures, instruments, machines, experiments, processes, systems, theories, or technologies; to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions as well as eventual mission characteristics and application.
  • Create and apply an analytic framework/system that will cultivate partnerships across multiple government agencies to enable building more symbiotic relationships.
  • Interfaces with the internal and external system customers and those responsible for developing, testing, and implementing the system and its elements.
  • Works with the various subsystem teams to verify and validate complex requirements, often from a combination of analysis, observation, real and simulated environmental testing, and an understanding of essential functional performance needs.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$114,000 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS clearance
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a SCI security clearance, which may require a polygraph test

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D Systems Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

  • Exceptional technical acumen with proven experience in field testing and integrating knowledge across diverse engineering disciplines.
  • Military operations background or deep understanding of mission environments, providing operational awareness and practical context to technical decisions.

  • Highly analytical problem solver who can translate customer requirements into clear, actionable, and meaningful engineering tasks.

  • Proven project and resource management skills, including managing staffing, budgets, equipment, and lab space for rapid-response efforts.
  • Customer-centric approach with strong experience eliciting, defining, and delivering on technical requirements in partnership with sponsors across government agencies and trusted mission partners.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities, able to manage competing priorities across multiple programs and deliver under pressure.

About Our Team:

The Applied Technologies Department (5945) is responsible for delivering a wide range of solutions, from concept to completion, including design, manufacturing, integration, and validation. We tackle complex technical challenges and innovate to provide effective solutions that support the missions of various government sponsors in the Threat Intelligence Community. Sandia's Threat Intelligence research enables the national security missions of the defense and intelligence communities to aid intelligence advantage to ensure global peace. We utilize Sandia's science, engineering, analytical and technological capabilities, and expertise in support of these communities to reduce threats to our nation.

Accelerating nuclear weapons proliferation and the growth of global civilian nuclear power in our uncertain and complex world creates a system of interdependent and constantly evolving risks which must be detected, understood, and addressed. Sandia National Laboratories¿ Center 5900, Proliferation Assessments (PA) mission objective is to deliver the United States government advanced systems and technologies, deep expertise, and situational awareness to confidently anticipate, assess, and address the potential use or misuse of nuclear proliferation threats worldwide. In partnership with other programs and capabilities across Sandia, PA capitalizes close working relationships with government sponsors to provide vision and technical leadership to the U.S. Intelligence Community and Department of Defense to achieve national non-proliferation objectives in an increasingly uncertain world.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
