Job Description

Summary

The Lead, Program Management will lead the development and day-to-day operations for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) Training Grant & Fellowship Program (TGFP), including directing, assessing, and improving the functions of the TGFP to support training grant and fellowship submissions by BCM faculty, and postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, respectively, and ultimately increase the number of funded training grants and fellowships across the College. The Lead will provide training, expertise and instruction, identify deficiencies, develop resources, and offer coaching and education to students and postdoctoral fellows preparing for applications.

This role is eligible for a hybrid work schedule working three days onsite and two days remotely each week.

Job Duties

Direction of the T32 Grants Program

  • Plans, develops, executes and assesses the T32 Grants Program’s organizational and operational processes and procedures in support of applications and progress reports for training grants for biomedical research trainees.
  • Manages data resources that support T32 training grant applications and assesses quality of data collection and input by other GSBS programs and offices.
  • Advises faculty Program Directors on data analysis and use in grant applications.
  • Analyzes outcomes of prior grant submissions and researches current training grant review practices. Uses this information to advise BCM’s Program Director community on grantsmanship best practices for future training grant applications.
  • Manages and analyzes data for T32 trainee outcomes, prepares reports for GSBS leadership and accreditation requirements.
  • Develops relationships with T32 program directors, tracks their appointment of trainees onto specific training grants and works with the GSBS Business Office to ensure tuition reimbursements are collected.
  • Researches training grant application/progress report requirements, as well as new and updated training grant policies, and communicates with BCM internal stakeholders.
  • Serves as administrator for the T32 database and works with Academic IT to ensure data collection and reporting tools are compliant with NIH requirements. Defines requirements for database updates as needed.

Direction of the Research Fellowship Program

  • Plans, develops, executes and assesses the Fellowship Program’s organizational and operational processes and procedures in support of applications and progress reports for biomedical trainee fellowships.
  • Identifies fellowship opportunities and other educational grant opportunities from the NIH, NSF, and other foundations and distributes information to potential applicants. Develops and maintains a database of fellowship opportunities for all research trainees at BCM.
  • Works with the Office of Research and Development to develop applicant pools for the fellowship programs and supports students and faculty for the development of competitive applications.
  • Identifies and transmits information and expert guidance for faculty mentoring and training plan requirements.
  • Develops and leads educational workshops, and offers individual consultations for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows on individual fellowship opportunities and skills pertaining to proposal preparation.

Additional TGFP Responsibilities

  • Analyzes industry trends and remains current with funding agency and regulatory changes.
  • Understands sponsor regulations and guidelines related to various awarding agencies and mechanisms inclusive of NIH Grants Policy Statement and post-award grants compliance. Educates trainees and faculty on best practices.
  • Compiles and creates education and research resources to demonstrate compliance with NIH requirements for training programs. Makes recommendations for any needed curriculum changes.
  • Works with students, trainees and faculty to develop high quality letters of support for training grants and fellowships.
  • Administers the Dean’s Award of Excellence Program recognizing achievement in obtaining competitive fellowship awards. Ensures compliance with established award criteria, policies, and procedures, in accordance with BCM travel and educational policies. Reviews and authorizes funding awards.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Six years of relevant experience.
