Job Description

The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral appointee to conduct research related to the solid-state battery manufacturing, such as cathode design, electrolyte development, interface engineering, cell assembly and testing. The candidate is expected to develop new processes to fabricate cathode and electrolyte, and new procedures to assemble and test solid-state batteries. The candidate is also expected to think and work independently and perform in a highly interdisciplinary environment of chemists, physicists, and materials scientists.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand relations of materials properties, processing, and properties for solid-state batteries.

  • Design electrodes, electrolyte, and interface for solid-state batteries.

  • Understand mass transport limiting on high-energy cells.

  • Develop techniques and strategies for cell electrochemical measurements and post-mortem analysis.

  • Write high impact papers on transformational battery technologies.

  • Network and develop collaboration with other groups and divisions internally and with other national labs, industry, and utilities.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in chemical engineering, materials science, applied physics, or a closely related field.

  • Knowledge of battery and electrode materials.

  • Skilled oral and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.

  • Self-motivated independent worker as well as good team player.

  • Publication record with excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability/aptitude to contribute to proposal writing, write reports, and publish journal papers and patents.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in electrode processing, material structural and microstructure analysis (such as SEM, TEM, XPS, XRD, and Raman), and electrochemical analysis such as impedance spectroscopy.

  • Experience and/or knowledge of slurry formulation and slurry coating.
