As the Director of Engineering at LASP, you will play a pivotal role in shaping our Engineering division, driving impactful initiatives across the lab, and providing vision and leadership to carry out multiple programs. The Engineering Director participates as a Chief Engineer in project development and reviews, is a senior member of the LASP executive leadership team and leads a talented team of 200+ professional and student employees to ensure the success of LASP programs in collaboration with campus and external partners.

At the forefront of aerospace innovation, the Engineering Division at LASP excels in space flight instrumentation design, development, production, and calibration, managing an impressive portfolio of approximately $70 million annually in advanced flight programs and missions, including spacecraft development. Additionally, we implement $15 million each year of advanced CubeSat programs, collaborating with a diverse array of domestic and international partners. Our highly skilled team of engineers and managers is pivotal in developing and executing comprehensive mission deployments across the globe. LASP is a world-renowned space science research institute at the University of Colorado Boulder. CU receives more NASA funding than any public university in the country, due in large part to LASP programs. Professional engineers work closely with scientists and assembly technicians in designing and building space flight hardware while helping mentor students as entry-level engineers working on these programs. Provide comprehensive and strategic leadership, direction, and guidance to Engineering division in support of strengthening the status of LASP as a leader in aerospace and scientific research.
Lead implementation and execution of LASP, CU, State of Colorado, and Federal initiatives.
Oversee major division metrics, including performance, financials, requirements, and progress reporting.
Manage the personnel, facilities, equipment, and training for the division including advocating for career development and growth of division team members.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other LASP divisions, LASP Executive Leadership, and University of Colorado business units.
Maintain contacts with government partners, advocate for science and LASP at various levels, and represent the division to external entities.
Coordinate management of laboratory space and $68 million worth of capital equipment.
Manage approximately $60 million in annual expenditures and play a key role in new business development.
Oversee the design, development, and testing of aerospace systems, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.
Lead collaboration with aerospace and supply chain companies.
Ensure all business is conducted ethically and in compliance with laws and regulations.
Maintain open communication with LASP management and ensure division adherence to relevant compliance requirements.

The salary range for this position is $250,000 - $285,000. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 200% matching for the first 5% contributed with immediate vesting. Relocation assistance is available per institute guidelines.
