What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Engineering Sciences Center is seeking a student intern to contribute to the understanding of the dynamic behavior of structures to operational and laboratory environments. We are looking for a highly motivated, team-oriented individual that is capable of supporting programs in this technical area. The successful candidate will have a strong technical interest in experimental structural dynamics and will be responsible for setting up and performing experiments and processing the resulting data.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

• Assist staff members in structural dynamics, vibration, acoustics, shock, or solid mechanics testing
• Process data or script processes using various software systems, including MatLab, Python, LabView, SolidWorks, etc.
• Research current state of the art in these fields utilizing scientific literature
• Plan and design experiments, write reports in PowerPoint or Word

Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

• Earned bachelor's degree
• Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
• Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
• U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

• Experience in a vibration, acoustics, structural mechanics, materials science, modal, or structural dynamics laboratory
• Strong verbal and communication skills
• Ability to interact well with fellow technical workers of diverse technical backgrounds

About Our Team:

The Experimental Structural Dynamics Department (01522) is an integral part of the Engineering Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. Our Center is the steward of engineering mechanics and dynamics for Sandia, and we are dedicated to solving our customer’s most pressing and important national security problems. Our department specializes in advanced experimental diagnostic methods to characterize the inherent dynamic properties of structures and their complex response under operational environments. We support instrumentation efforts for high-consequence environmental tests and field data collection operations. We provide experimental modal models as well as high-quality data for analytical model validation through collaboration with the Analytical Structural Dynamics Department. The team also maintains a considerable R&D portfolio with focus areas including hybrid system modeling/substructuring, advanced multi-axis ground testing methods, nonlinear dynamics, transfer path analysis, experimental uncertainty quantification, and high-speed non-contact diagnostics. Security Clearance:
