Job Description

Kansas State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Chief Technology Officer.

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) serves as the university’s senior information technology executive and leads and manages the Division of Information Technology (DIT), the university’s enterprise IT organization. The CTO provides vision, leadership, strategic planning, and oversight for information technology throughout all functions and campuses of Kansas State University. The CTO will lead the university-wide strategic use of information technology to enable success in achieving the university’s teaching, research and engagement missions, provide excellent service and support to all constituents at K-State, and ensure effective and efficient academic and administrative functions. The CTO will report to the Vice President for Administration and Finance.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Required competencies/qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree plus 10 or more years of senior level experience leading high-performing information technology, computer, and communication systems teams.
Preferred competencies/qualifications:

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in business administration, computer science, data science, information science or related field.
Knowledge, Skills and Work Experience:

Record of experience as a strategic leader who is customer and business driven with a demonstrated commitment to customer service and the ability to integrate business and technology strategies to improve an institution’s overall programs and services
Demonstrated success as a collaborator, relationship builder, and change agent, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and ability to build coalitions and collaborative working relationships with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups, including senior executives, to achieve results
10 or more years of information management or IT management within the higher education environment— with some experience at or near the executive level
Proven record of success in an administrative leadership position with responsibility for guiding strategy, budget planning and financial management, staffing and personnel management, policy formulation, business planning and operations, continuous service improvement, and risk management
Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, launch and deliver multiple technology projects on time and within budget
Seasoned competence in at least six of following areas: 1) IT governance processes; 2) capital planning, ROI, and cost analysis; 3) process metrics and reporting; 4) enterprise architecture; 5) infrastructure and information security, privacy, and business continuity; 6) business process analysis; 7) information architecture and management; 8) systems acquisition and development; 9) operations (infrastructure and applications), 10) outsourcing, and 11) higher education practices
Ability to effectively delegate as well as to supervise, lead, manage, and develop high performing personnel and teams and foster a unified IT culture that values diversity
Innovative with the ability to think and plan strategically consistent with institutional goals and customer needs
Ability to effectively execute complex technology plans and strategies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences
Experience with large enterprise applications or systems
Experience with large, ERP and/or multi-project implementations
Proven record of building close working relationships with an academic community in a higher education setting to advance the use of technology in support of academic innovation
Other Requirements:
