POSITION INFORMATION: Under direct supervision of licensed pharmacist(s), communicates with patients, physicians, and third-party providers. Provides assistance to the pharmacy personnel by performing authorizations, data entry and inventory maintenance, communicating with patients and third parties, and acting as the pharmacy cashier. 

 DUTIES:

  • Pharmaceutical Assistance:  Assists the pharmacists and support personnel in the preparation of prescriptions. Resolves intermediate to complex questions or issues that reflect substantial variety and detail.
  • Authorization: Reviews and approves petitions for medication authorization.  Reviews clinical guidelines for medication criteria for prior authorization.  
  •  Data Entry:  Handles patient prescription requests within HIPAA guidelines and enters refill orders for processing. Troubleshoots to obtain missing prescription information and interpret medical abbreviations (SIG codes). Verifies patient information to ensure that data entry is accurate.
  •  Inventory Maintenance:  Assures that the pharmacy maintains sufficient inventory levels of pharmaceuticals, over-the-counter medications, and supplies to adequately fulfill patient’s needs. This includes reviewing current inventory levels, ordering, and stocking products to ensure adequate in-stock condition of the pharmacy.
  • Communication: Able to communicate effectively with physicians, case management, nursing, patients, and employees to handle prescription processing, prior authorizations, clinic orders, and all other prescription related requests.
  •  Cashier:  Accurately handles the financial transactions for patients at the cash register. This includes ensuring that the right patient receives the right medication along with the correct co-payment amounts.
  •  As Needed:  Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
 

Job Requirements

Education:  High School diploma or GED
 
Experience: 12 months experience in a pharmacy, retail, medical, or customer service setting
 
Certifications / Licenses: 
  • Pharmacy Technician permit issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy for positions functioning within a pharmacy. Must obtain the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy permit within 90 days from hire date
Skills:
  • Prior cash handling experience (such as restaurant work, store clerk)
  • Proficiency on Microsoft Office programs: Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Office/clerical or administrative experience to include answering the telephone, filing, making copies, computer/data entry, greeting and assisting the public

Working Conditions: 

  • Physical: Must be able to work on feet, or sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Environmental: Standard outpatient pharmacy and or office.
