At OU Physicians -Tulsa, patients receive the latest medical advancements expected of a leading university clinic. The services and their experience are delivered by a dedicated team with diverse experience. The Medical Assistant, under direct supervision of a physician or other medical personnel, performs routine patient care functions such as physician assistance, patient placement, testing, information gathering, nursing duties, chaperoning, supply maintenance, and scheduling.  May coordinate schedules of patients in an outpatient clinic and provide clerical assistance toward the smooth operation of the facility.

 

Position Information: Under direct supervision of a physician or other medical personnel, performs routine patient care functions such as physician assistance, patient placement, testing, information gathering, nursing duties, chaperoning, supply maintenance, and scheduling.  May coordinate schedules of patients in an outpatient clinic and provide clerical assistance toward the smooth operation of the facility.  

 

 

Representative Duties:

  1.  Physician Assistance.  Assists physician or other medical personnel in the examination process as required or necessary.

  2. Patient Placement.  Places patients in exam rooms.  Drapes and positions patients for appropriate exams or procedures.  Assists in restraining or controlling patients (infants, children, geriatrics, etc.). 

  3. Test Performance.  Performs simple routine tests on patients such as audiograms, vision, spirometer, EKG, rapid strep, urinalysis, and urine pregnancy tests.   

  4. Information Gathering.  Obtains and records vital signs including body temperature, height, weight, and blood pressure.  Takes and documents complaints and patient histories including allergies, immunization histories, etc.  Maintains patient confidentiality.  Receives and returns telephone calls from or to patients, pharmacies, etc. Obtains authorizations and referrals.

  5. Nursing.  Performs various nursing duties such as PFT and PT/INR testing and administration of injections.

  6. Chaperoning.  Chaperones examinations and patients. 

  7. Supply Maintenance.  Responsible for stocking exam rooms, taking inventory, ordering supplies, and sterilizing instruments and/or equipment.

  8. Scheduling.  Makes scheduling arrangements with other healthcare professionals and facilities.

  9. As Needed.  Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Job Requirements

Education:

 

High School diploma or GED or completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program.

 

 

Experience:

6 months experience in Patient Care as a Medical Assistant or 6 months performing electronic order entry as a qualified ABR-OE.

 

Certifications/ Licenses: 

CPR Certified and/or BLS. Certified as a Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, or qualified ABR-OE, or ability to obtain the certification within 90 days of employment in the position. 

 

Equivalent/Substitution: Will accept a student who has completed an internship/externship and graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program in lieu of required experience.

 

KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

Advanced knowledge of medical terminology.

Ability to interact professionally with healthcare practitioners and patients.

Ability to supervise.

Ability to speak fluent English and Spanish.

Ability to read and write English and Spanish.

Ability to work independently and as a team player.

Must be detail oriented and complete work tasks.

Ability to maintain composure even in difficult situations.

Ability to be understanding and sensitive to needs of others.

 

Physical Requirements:

Outpatient medical environment and exposure dependent upon assignment. The essential functions of this position will involve mobility (walking; being able to stand for long periods of time during patient exams/procedures, etc.). Dependent upon assignment, must be able to lift up to 50 lbs in the function of patient positioning and assistance.
