Research Fellow in Cryo-EM Sample Preparation

University of Leeds

Leeds, United Kingdom

Job posting number: #7135471 (Ref:FBSBM1190)

Posted: March 22, 2023

Job Description

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in cryo-EM? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

Although there have been significant developmental steps in hardware and software for single particle cryo-EM, sample preparation is still dominated by approaches developed long before the “resolution revolution” which although appropriate for some proteins are not sufficient for others.  Moreover, despite recent developments in the use of direct deposition technologies we lack an understanding of the influences that occur during sample preparation. Therefore, the overarching aim of this project is to provide a detailed understanding of the factors that influence protein behaviour and stability in the thin film environment formed during cryo-EM sample preparation and devise evidence-based solutions and robust protocols, applicable over a range of sample types.

We are looking for a candidate with experience in cryoEM or a related technique, and who would like to further apply their expertise in this area. Leeds houses a national training program for cryoEM and therefore, full training will be provided in all techniques, where required. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing new approaches to sample preparation and will have access to cutting edge equipment for sample preparation, data collection and data processing. Our interdisciplinary project team includes Dr Stephen Muench and Dr Charlie Scarff whose groups work on a number of different structural projects integrating cryo-EM, mass spectrometry and other biophysical techniques. Moreover, you will form part of the wider Astbury society and cryoEM community providing a diverse and supportive environment for you to work and develop your skills. We are dedicated to providing training both on the direct projects but also in the wider skills required for careers both within and outside of academia.
