Job Description

Summary

The Eye Bank Specialist is an integral position to the Lions Eye Bank.  The position works to procure tissue from the local hospitals, morgues, and funeral homes.  The tissue is used in transplant surgery and/or research.  The position is responsible for determining whether the tissue is suitable for donation.

Job Duties

  • Responsible for the timely release/suitability determine of ocular tissue for research and/or transplant purposes, and processes tissue according to surgery needs.  Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Upon notification of a decedent, the specialist performs microscopic evaluation of tissue for suitability determination; perform initial referral screening and internal processing of tissue; obtain legal consent and communication.  
  • Ability to perform eye recovery procedures and assist in trainings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree either AA, BS or BA.
  • Certifications COA, COT or COMT through JCAHPO
  • Experience working as an ophthalmic assistant or ophthalmic technician within an ophthalmology practice.
