Job Description

Lab profile:

The Vassar Lab is a neuroscience lab with the aim of understanding the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases using animal models and human patient samples.

Job Summary:

A senior postdoctoral researcher is needed for a neuroscience lab at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Dept of Neurology.

Vassar Lab: We study the molecular and cellular mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease with the goal of contributing to the discovery of effective disease-modifying therapies. With this wide reaching goal, we have multiple projects focusing on diverse aspects of Alzheimer’s disease pathology. We investigate the β-secretase enzyme BACE1, which initiates the production of the β-amyloid peptide that plays a central early role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s. We use a combination of approaches to investigate the role of BACE1 in health and disease, and predict side-effects of BACE1 inhibitors currently in clinical trials. This specific project involves the study of RNA binding protein networks and Tau-mediated neurodegeneration.

Other projects study rare genetic mutations that increase the risk of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. We are currently investigating the role of a rare mutation in the angiotensin converting enzyme highly associated with Alzheimer’s disease. We also study a mutation in UNC5C, a gene associated with late-onset Alzheimer’s disease to understand how apoptosis contributes to the development of the disease. Finally, we investigate how the microbiome affects astrocyte activation and inflammation in Alzheimer’s disease.

This project on RNA binding protein networks and Tauopathy and dementia involves extensive mouse genetics work and human iPSCs work. The Postdoc researcher is expected to lead the project by performing experiments on mouse genetic models, and cell culture involving human Alzheimer patients’ derived iPSCs and their differentiation in vitro. The successful candidate should be able to write their manuscripts, and submit NIH grants, fellowships, and foundation grants.

Lab website:

Please note: Interested candidates should e-mail a single PDF with a cover letter briefly describing their research interests and qualifications, a curriculum vitae, as well as the names and contact information for three references to [email protected] and [email protected]

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience, genetics, molecular biology, cell biology or any other related disciplines.
Previous experience working with animal models and familiarity with mouse genetics. Experience with neurodegenerative disease animal models is a plus but not essential. Experience in iPSCs or/and neuronal culture is preferred but not required.
The successful candidate should have published first-author papers from his or her prior work and is motivated to drive his/her own projects.
